Have a plan prior to your hike. Give friends or family the actual trails you intend on hiking.  If you don't return by a certain time, someone will know where to look.  Have that plan in place. Also, don't deviate from your scheduled route.  This would lead rescue teams in the wrong direction.


 
Let's start with some basic equipment.  As we stated above - the compass.  Everyone knows what it is, but how do you actually use one?  These days, compasses come in all shapes and sizes and are available in a variety of material types.  Some watches are equipped with a built in compass and are waterproof.  Still available is the old stand by round compass which is the most familiar to most of us.  In any case, as we have already established, having a compass is of no use unless you know how to use it.  To begin, one must know that the needle always points towards the north pole.  Lay the compass down on a flat rock and identify in what direction the needle is pointing.  Then move the compass around so the N (for north) is aligned with the needle.  Now you know where the north is.  From there you can get your bearings as to where north (N), south(S), east (E) and west (W) are located.  Now, here's where your preparedness comes in.  In what direction did you begin?  If you are attempting to get back to your starting point, begin walking in the direction from where you came.  Along the way, continue to utilize the compass in order to be sure you are continuing in the right direction
.
